Diabetic Shoes Fitting Guide

Why Diabetic Shoes?

Many doctors recommend patients purchase shoes specifically designed for diabetics. When looking for a pair of diabetic shoes, the patient should make sure the shoe has proper ventilation, which allows the feet to reduce dampness and heat. Sweat often is an ideal environment for bacteria and infection to grow. You want to make sure the toe and heel curve slightly, forcing your feet to be in balance when you walk. To prevent injury to susceptible and sensitive toes, the shoe’s toe box should be high and durable. The shoe should also be lightweight and seamless to prevent any irritation like calluses, infection or blisters.

Diabetic shoes are often wider and deeper than regular shoes, to make room for special diabetic insoles. It is also important for a diabetic to have shoes with good air circulation. By ensuring proper fit and good air circulation, properly designed diabetic shoes and insoles prevent pressure ulcers, encourage good blood circulation, and allow the skin to breathe.

Proper Foot Care for Diabetes

Here are some tips to help prevent and relieve discomfort associated with foot pain in diabetics.

  • Take the time to carefully trim your toenails
  • Wash your feet everyday with mild soap and tepid water
  • Rub and moisturize your feet regularly
  • Wear proper fitting diabetic shoes
  • Wear proper fitting diabetic socks
  • Be conscious about your feet and report any sores, discomfort, or infections to your doctor
  • See your doctor for a regular foot checkup at least once every three months

What to Look for When Buying Diabetic Shoes

  • Diabetic Shoes need to have a breathable construction
  • Shoes with a deep and wide designs allow room for feet to breath
  • Look for shoes with no interior seams (or covered seams) to prevent rubbing injuries
  • Diabetic Shoes need a roomy "toe box" to prevent pinching or squeezing of the toes
